Okcupid is a very popular free online dating website (and mobile app!) that functions more like a social network geared towards matchmaking than it does a typical website. Lots of people use it for everything from quick hookups to making lasting friendships to finding their soul mate.
One of okcupid’s biggest draws is it’s popularity. You’ll find tons of users of all genders, sexualities, personalities, etc, etc. Part of the reason for this popularity is how all basic features of the site are completely free. Sure, they have a paid membership option called “A-list” (more on that in a moment), but everything you need to poke around, and talk to people (and I mean talk to anyone, not just paying members), is all completely free.
Add to that that they have a huge list of sexualities and genders to pick from, including “other” options for both, if none of the labels suit you, or you just don’t want to label yourself, and it’s easy to see why okcupid is as popular as it is, making this a great LGBT+ dating site.
Membership Costs and Features
All of the basic features of the site you need to do what you came here for and start finding some possible matches for yourself (and talking to them), are totally free. With a basic, free account, you can browse matches, fill out your profile, answer as many questions as you please (question answering is one of the more interesting parts of okcupid, but we’ll get to that in a bit), and send and receive as many messages as you want to and from anyone you want.
Okcupid does, however, have two totally optional levels of paid membership if you want even more out of the site than the basic stuff, called A-List Basic and A-List Premium.
A-List Basic costs $9.95 USD for one month, $7.95 per month if you buy three months at once, and $4.95 per month if you buy 6 months at once. In addition to all the basic features, A-List Basic lets you see who likes you, use more specific advanced search filters, browse other users profiles without them knowing you were looking, filter your messages, tell if someone has read your messages or not, the ability to change your username, the ability to store more messages in your inbox, and it removes ads.
A-List Premium costs $24.90 for one month, $22.90 per month if you buy three months at once, and $19.90 per month if you buy 6 months at once. In addition to all the A-List Basic and free account features, you also get a daily “boost” that makes your profile show up for more people, higher in the list, once per day in peak hours. You also get your “attractiveness” score boosted, once again making you seen to more people. Your outgoing messages will also appear at the top of other users’ inboxes, and you can see peoples’ answers to questions even before you answer them.
Sign Up Process
Signing up takes very little time at all. First, you choose your sexuality and gender (and again, there are tons of options for both), enter your email and location, decide on a username and password, and then you’re in! It’ll take a few minutes to fill out your profile and start answering questions , but isn’t that always the case?
Protect Your Privacy
Okcupid does require you put in a valid address and email address, but this information is not shared with other users unless you want it to be. In general, you can be as open or as private as you want here.
Okcupid’s most unique and interesting feature is question answering. To be more specific, you have the option to answer questions created by other users which will appear for you one by one in a semi-random order also influenced by the popularity of the question. These can be about anything from pet preferences to hobbies to politics to really just about anything, since they’re created by other users. On that note, you can make up your own questions and answer them too!
These questions actually figure into the matchmaking algorithms okcupid uses to determine who might be good matches for you. When you answer a question, you also say what answer or answers your ideal partner would choose, and how important it is to you that they answer the way you indicate, so okcupid will tally all the questions you consider important, and that your possible matches consider important, and try to suggest matches to you with the highest number of questions answered according to these parameters. It’s really kind of ingenious.
And don’t worry, if you want to answer specific questions that you see on other people’s profiles, you don’t have to rely on randomness to deliver it to you; you can answer directly on the other person’s profile. You can also answer privately if you wish, but you won’t be able to see other peoples’ answer to the same question unless you answered publicly.
Overall, I honestly feel Okcupid is one of the best options there is in online dating. I myself used okcupid when I was single and looking, and I met a lot of interesting people there. Even now that I’m in a satisfied monogamous relationship, I’ve thought about using my account just to find interesting local friends, due to the flexibility and usefulness of the site.
And with the sensitivity the creators show towards queer sexualities, genders, etc, and all of the options you have to identify yourself, including transgender, nonbinary, asexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual and a lot more, and an “I don’t want straight people to be able to see my profile” option, okcupid is a pretty fantastic choice if you’re looking for an LGBT+or bisexuals dating sites. All in all, I highly recommend okcupid to anyone looking for romance, friendship, short term fun, or finding your soul mate.
